IRL 307 THEORY OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS I 2+0
The emergence of the international relations as a new discipline and the academic debates and the schools which initialized the new discipline; realism versus idealism. The Second World War and its role in the development of the theory of international relations discipline: classic view versus behaviorist view. The ideas of the principle scholars who shaped the debates between idealism-realism and classism-behavioralism.
IRL 309 DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENCE I 3+0
After the basic English courses that were taken during the first four semesters of the undergraduate education, students are enrolled in these courses during the next four semesters. The aim of these advanced courses is to enable students to use English fluently by reading and translating international treaties, diplomatic letters and principle books and articles written in the area of international relations. Courses will focus mostly on class exercises.

The collapse of the Soviet Union, the shifts in global political economy from Atlantic to Pacific and the American initiatives to preserve global leadership. Challenges to American hegemony.

Ethnic, linguistic, cultural, political and economic problems that the Turkish world faces. Relations of Turkey with the Turkish world and repercussions. Intra-state issues of the Turkish world.
IRL 403 CURRENT INTERNATIONAL ISSUES 3+0
Globalization process, regional integrations, self-determination principle and the independence movements accelerated by this principle, ethnic disputes, economic interdependence, economic imbalance among different regions, North-South imbalance, mass movement of refugees and its results, worldwide starvation problem. Grounds of international terrorism, ecological problems, the end of the Cold War and its by-products: disarmament versus proliferation of nuclear arms, New World Order discussions. Sources and dynamics of worldwide current issues and proposals for their settlement.
IRL 405 COMPARATIVE FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS I 2+0
In this two-semester course some specific cases of the post-World War II will be analyzed. By using these analyzes, the goals, strategies and tools of the policies of Turkey and the global powers will be evaluated, the goals and the results will be discussed in a comparative basis.
IRL 407 INTERNATIONAL LAW OF THE SEA 2+0 elective
Historical development of the international law of the sea and codification efforts; the rules concerned with the delimitation of territorial sea, rules for the countries located on islands, archipelagic countries; sovereignty rights of state on internal waters, territorial waters, continental shelf, contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone, internationally observed cases related to these maritime zones, reservations to the absolute sovereignty rights of states in their maritime territories (innocent passage, transit passage and related international discussions.

Worldwide security issues emerged especially after the end of the Cold War. Security vacuums which are observed in the geopolitics of Turkey and the Turkish world. Concepts of security shift, ambiguous threat and means to cope with them. The new positions of the global organizations such as United Nations and NATO against these new threats and security shifts. New security architecture negotiations for Europe, Mediterranean and Black Sea region and repercussions on Turkish strategic appraisal.
IRL 410 TURKEY AND THE EUROPEAN UNION 3+0
Historical and philosophical background of the relations between Turkey and the European Union. Ankara Agreement and its aftermath, Turkey’s application in 1987 for the full membership, the stance of the European Communities (and than EU) against Turkey after 1991 Maastricht Treaty and repercussions, Customs Union Treaty of 1996. Current relations between Turkey and the European Union. Problems and possible solutions for Turkey for a future membership to the EU.
IRL 412 GRADUATION PROJECT 4+0
Students choose a topic in coordination with their advisors and prepare a final paper of 30-40 pages length.
IRL 414 INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL POLITICS 2+0 (elective)
The historical developments of social policy and social security policy. Cooperation of intergovernmental social security and social policy towards resolution of social security problems; multilateral agreements; ILO (International Labour Organization) Treaties.
IRL 418 POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN CAUCASUS 2+0 (elective)
Departing from the ethno-cultural structure of the Transcaucaus region, historical roots of the current conflicts will be depicted. Special emphasizes will be addressed to Nagorno-Karabagh conflict, Chechen issue and related topics. Importance of the region with respect to political economy (e.g. oil, natural gas, oil-gas pipelines) will be discussed. Power politics of potential regional powers such as Turkey, Iran and Russia will be given special emphasis.
